MASTER OF THEOLOGY (MTh)


The objectives of the Institute are informed by the Mission Statement of Methodist Church Nigeria.  The Institute is out to:

 

  1. Provide qualitative advanced theological education characterized by continuing commitment to serious and impartial investigation of truth in order to train effective men and women for Churches in Africa and beyond.
  2. Develop in the students a critical, analytical and reflective thinking for effective learning and service
  3. Provide knowledge and skills in advanced theological training for men and women irrespective of ethnic, linguistic and social and economic background.
  4. Train effective leaders for Church and society both locally and internationally.
  5. Teach and contextualize Bible in line with the Christian faith and practice same in the priesthood of all believers for the purpose of integrating individual and community for the transformation of the society.                       
  6. Guide the students in the making of moral choices that reflect the evangelical faith in the view of the ethnical demands of the ministerial call and more importantly to improve their spiritual lives.

  1. MODE OF STUDY – Modula

SUMMARY OF COURSES FOR THE PROGRAMME:

  1. A total of 12 modules for two years maximum.
  2. Seven modules must be taken from your area of study
  3. At least 2 must be taken from General Studies
  4. At least 3 should be taken from other areas of studies and not more than 2 from one area.

 

BIBLICAL STUDIES (OLD TESTAMENT)

This programme is designed for students to demonstrate an analytical knowledge of hermeneutics of the Old Testament, adequate understanding of theological and biblical knowledge applicable to the Nigerian context. It will also assist students to demonstrate analytical skills needed to research in biblical and theological fields, and students will be able to show competence in the use of Hebrew language.

 

BIBLICAL STUDIES (NEW TESTAMENT)

This programme is designed for students to demonstrate an analytical knowledge of hermeneutics of the New Testament, adequate understanding of theological and biblical knowledge applicable to the Nigerian context. It will also assist students to demonstrate analytical skills needed to research in biblical and theological fields, and students will be able to show competence in the use of Greek language.

 

 WESLEYAN STUDIES

The programme aims at widening students’ knowledge of the life and ministry of the Wesleys. Students will be capable of demonstrating an awareness of the relevance of historical understanding of the Wesleys to contemporary church life, worship and practices. Students will also be able to acquire the skills needed to interface history with theology for better understanding of Wesleyan concept on theological issues, develop and demonstrate analytical skills for research in Wesleyan studies.

 

PRACTICAL THEOLOGY

The programme is designed to be a professional preparation in the aspect of pastoral ministry and praxis. It will enable students to grasp an in-depth knowledge of pastoral theology, pastoral care and counselling and Christian leadership skills needed to administer churches. It also enshrine students to demonstrate the skills needed for interface preaching with the overall theological training within an African context. Students will be capable of demonstrating analytical skills needed to research in biblical and theological fields

 

MISSION STUDIES

The programme exposes the students to a general scope of mission studies. It will expose the students to a biblical basis for church growth, church planting and evangelism. It will enhance students to develop clear and biblical rationale for mission. Students will also be able to demonstrate adequate knowledge about theories of mission and be able to plan strategies for effective mission approaches. It will equally enhance students to demonstrate analytical skills needed to do research in mission

 

SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY

The programme is intended to enhance students’ discussion on branches of systematic theology such as Christology, pneumatology, and other major theological themes from biblical, systematic and contemporary perspectives. Students will develop skill to analyse, describe, and evaluate the nature and issues of contextual theologies in Africa, Asia, Latin and North America
