Bachelor of Theology(B.Th)

Nature of the Programme

The Bachelor of Theology Degree programme is designed primarily for candidates seeking ordination especially within the Methodist denomination. The programme helps to prepare students for a life time of fruitful leadership whether called to parish ministry, a specialized chaplaincy or a ministry beyond the local pastorate. Candidates from other denominations may however take advantage of the programme but would be required to take additional directed or independent courses to meet their denominational requirement for ordination. Non-ordination independent candidates may also take this course for self-enrichment or professional fulfilment.

 

Structure of the Programme

  1. The programme is broadly divided into three parts, namely; Theological/cognate courses, World Religions and general studies. Students are required to take courses in all the three parts in proportion to the percentage allotted to each part. Students should seek the advice of the Dean of Academics and/or their Tutorial/Pastoral group Masters to help guide their selection of courses. 

 
  1. The Theological and cognate courses consist of Biblical Studies, Church History, Systematic Theology, Wesleyan Studies and courses in Practical Theology. This part covers 70 percent of the programme.

 
  1. Courses in the second part cover history and basic beliefs of the major World Religions and Interfaith Dialogue. This section covers 10 percent of the programme.

 
  1. The third part consists of courses in general studies such as Computer appreciation, Research Methodology, Church Administration and Leadership. The general studies courses are pre-requisites and cover 20 percent of the programme.    

 

Duration

For the award of the Bachelor of Theology (B.Th) Degree, candidates with Ordinary level School Certificate will spend four years full-time while candidates with Diploma/NCE in Theology/Religious Studies will spend three years full time. 

 

Bachelor of Arts in Theology (B.A (Th))

This programme is accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and affiliated to Wesley University, Ondo.

 

a) Philosophy

The programme is designed to reflect discourse on God, through general and special revelation of Himself and His relationship to creation. Through a biblically integrated curriculum, students will be equipped to assume positions of leadership, influence, and responsibility in Church, community, schools and other organizations, both locally and globally.

 

b) Objectives

 

The aim of the programme is to provide holistic theological education that enhances students’ spirituality, leadership and ministerial skills, and the capability to pursue postgraduate studies in theology and other related courses. 

The programme objectives are to:

 
  1. Acquaint students with basic knowledge of Christian Religion as it relates to other religions, such as African Traditional Religion, Islam and Judaism.

  2. Inculcate in the students the needed qualities for ministerial vocation, teaching career, administration, social work and offer them solid academic background for professional degrees.

  3. Orient students towards developing minds of a broad spectrum conducive to a pluralistic and multicultural society such as Nigeria as well as harnessing the sacred and secular worldviews towards an integrated and peaceful community.  

  4. Enable students to engage, understand, interpret, and communicate the biblical
    revelation in ways that will meet the needs of the 21st Century audience.  

  5. Help students develop critical understanding, assimilation and application of
    biblical and theological principles of ministry in contemporary society.

  6. Enable students to acquire knowledge and practical skills in the performance of
    Christian ministry under the guidance and supervision of competent ministers,
    teachers and experts.   

  7. Equip students to acquire and apply research skills.

 

Duration

The programme offered is Bachelor of Arts in Theology. On duration of the programme, candidates who enter through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) normally will spend 4 years (minimum), while the Direct Entry or Inter-University transfer candidates will spend 3 years (minimum).

 

a) Regime of Subject knowledge 

 
  • An understanding of the major areas in the discipline of Theology—biblical studies, historical and comparative studies, systematic theology, pastoral theology, worship and homiletics, liturgy, ethics, missions and evangelism, chaplaincy, and spirituality. 

  • Demonstrate competency in contextual theological concepts.

  • Apply research methodologies to identified topics related to Theological Studies. 

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge in one of the biblical languages (Greek or Hebrew).

 

 b) Competencies and Skills 

      The competencies and skills expected of graduates of the programme include: 

  • basic knowledge of Christianity and appreciation of other religions

  • manifesting the required skills to excel as ministers of the gospel and professionals in their chosen career

  • being vast in scripture and preach effectively. 

  • knowledgeable in scriptural knowledge and theology as well as deploy same in addressing societal challenges

  • being able to practise as ministers of the gospel 

  • submitting themselves to mentorship

  • being able to engage in independent research 

  • ability to reflect on their own experiences in the light of theological perspectives

  • articulation of the importance and relevance of strong thought-leadership for spiritual and cultural change.

 

 c) Behavioural Attributes 

 
  • Graduates are expected to exhibit traits of tolerance and peaceful co-existence

  • Graduates should have a sense of responsibility and commitment to the Christian faith

  • Graduates should live upright and dedicated  lifestyle

  • Graduates should exhibit Servant and Selflessness traits
